Valentine’s Day, celebrated annually on February 14th, has a rich history dating back centuries. While its exact origins are somewhat murky, the holiday is believed to have originated from the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia. This fertility celebration, held in mid-February, honored the Roman god of agriculture and fertility, Faunus, as well as the founders of Rome, Romulus, and Remus.
Over time, Lupercalia evolved into a Christian holiday associated with the feast day of St. Valentine. The historical figure of St. Valentine is shrouded in legend, with several accounts attributing acts of compassion and love to different martyrs named Valentine. One popular legend suggests that St. Valentine, a Roman priest, defied Emperor Claudius II’s decree banning marriages for young men, secretly performing marriages for couples in love. Another tale depicts St. Valentine as a sympathetic figure who sent letters signed “From your Valentine” to his jailer’s daughter while imprisoned.
In the Middle Ages, Valentine’s Day became associated with romantic love through the writings of poets like Geoffrey Chaucer and William Shakespeare. By the 18th century, exchanging handwritten notes, known as valentines, became a popular tradition in England. Today, Valentine’s Day is celebrated around the world with gestures of affection, gifts, and expressions of love.
